Art Lending Library is a project by Market Gallery and Walker & Bromwich’. ‘The Art Lending Library is an evolving social sculpture housing a diverse collection of artworks that can be enjoyed in your own home’ Gi 2012

Art Lending Library was conceived by Michelle Emery-Barker for Market Gallery for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, 2012. It was developed in collaboration with Walker and Bromwich, Sebastian Gorton Kalvik and Sophie Dyer and Good Press. It offered and facilitated unprecedented access to contemporary art, allowing users to experience it within their home. It was made possible through the generosity of the participating artist who gifted their works to the public for the duration of the project.

The library contained works from over 50 artists and its content was curated by Michelle Emery-Barker, Martin Craig and Walker and Bromwich. The central library mechanism and public parade was conceived as a major artwork by Walker and Bromwich, offering an unique and inspiring visitor experience. The accompanying catalogue, website and visual identity was developed by Sebastian Kalvik Gorton and Sophie Dyer. An accompanying reference reading library was curated by Good Press including artist books and publications.

The first edition facilitated loans of works of art to over 100 library users including schools, community groups and businesses. It received much critical and public acclaim.

Due to this success, Walker and Bromwich have subsequently toured this edition of the project to Darlington Crown Street Library (2014), East Durham Creates Festival – 3 venues – Peterlee, Thornley, South Hetton (2014), NGCA, Sunderland (2015), Metal, Peterborough (2016) DMU Gallery, Leister (2017-18)   bringing art to areas in the North East of England with little or no arts provision.

The Art Lending Library Manifesto, offers information and guidance to instruct the setting up of an Art Lending Library in this format and is available on request.
